Working in Trondheim on navigation sensor development

Three of Nortek’s interns, Peder, Dorothea and Erik, worked with Nortek’s development office in Trondheim, Norway. All three were current or newly graduated students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and worked together on a new sensor testing platform. The project incorporated elements of machine learning, training AI models, and building a robot as part of a team. Their project will be built upon and used by Nortek’s full-time team in Trondheim for continued underwater navigation system development.

Erik, a master’s student in electronic engineering, says the internship was not only relevant to the specialization he is studying, but also helped him develop his project planning, problem solving and teamwork skills.

“Knowing that my work will be built upon by the team here in Trondheim, and not sit idly in a corner gathering dust, is a bonus,” he jokes.

“I have never worked on such an ambitious project before, and it was really cool to see what just three people (with amazing help from the people at Nortek) can complete in such a short time,” adds Peder. “I have learned a lot about working on a large project with others and cooperating so everyone can do their jobs as efficiently as possible.”

Experiencing work culture at Nortek HQ

At Nortek’s headquarters in Rud (outside of Oslo), interns Emma and Anniken worked with Nortek’s quality and HR departments respectively. Emma, a student at NTNU, worked on developing a method for failure analysis and creating a database which will be used by Nortek’s support team in the future. Anniken created a new structure for Nortek’s internal information-sharing systems and made updates to employee and management handbooks.

Both interns enjoyed getting to experience the culture at Nortek’s main office and understanding more of what working in an office environment would look like in a future position. They also enjoyed the level of creative freedom and individual work they were given during the internship.

“I did the project on my own, so I really learned how to create tasks by myself and structure the work and come up with a solution at the end,” says Emma. “My experience prepared me for having working responsibilities and working in an organization.”

“I think this experience will make me a better student when I start my master’s degree,” adds Anniken. “I will be able to relate things I learn in lectures to real work life.”
