ADCPs measure water movement by interpreting sound waves (''pings'') transmitted by the instrument and subsequently reflected back to the instrument from particles in the water, such as sediment, plankton or other small particles.

They rely on the Doppler effect to determine the speed and direction of those passively moving particles, or ''scatterers'', thereby determining the speed and direction of the currents as well.
